I find it very interesting that I have 7 days in the entire month of November. The only reason that I was hired was because my supervisor insisted that they were really low on supervisors, however, I am the only new supervisor to be hired in the past month. When we initially talked, I was under the impression that I would be working 2-3 days a week, not 1-2. I think it is because a lot of the current building supervisors are older. They have been working at the Gemini Center since the building opened in 2008 and they have particular days that they like to work. I am not saying that I deserve more hours than them; I am just surprised that both my supervisor and the staff talk about how we need more people, but there are not enough hours for those people.
Obviously the building supervisor is not the only position at the Gemini Center apart from the full-time staff. Without the front desk, the facility would not run properly. These women deal with the most issues on a daily basis. They take payments, answer questions about the facility, sign members up for programs, answer the phones, deal with the money, etc. There are some days where these employees deal with a lot and other days are slower than others. They are always calling the building supervisors to help them deal with issues as well.
Another part-time position is the fitness floor worker. These employees have arguably the easiest position in the building. They sit at the fitness desk and make sure that no one is abusing the equipment and staying safe. If needed, they wipe down the equipment, but the main aspect is doing laundry for the dirty towels and putting out new ones for the members to use. There is just one worker on the fitness floor per shift and essentially they are the ones that members talk to the most. The maintenance staff, on the other hand, is arguably one of the most frustrating positions. There are many members who are respectful of the facility but also members who are not. They have to deal with the banquet rooms and moving tables and chairs in and out as requested, they pick up the garbage that the kids left in the gym and overall spend their nights cleaning the facility and others’ messes. Those are the three positions that I deal with the most; however, there are many lifeguards and kids club employees. There are mostly high schoolers who watch over the pools or play with the kids. The last part-time positions are the group exercise instructors. I had no idea that being a group instructor could be like a full time job. Many instructors do not just teach at the recreation center, but they teach at other surrounding suburbs’ recreation centers as well. There are also so many group classes that I had never heard of and would love to try one day. There are at least three group classes every weeknight and even some for kids. I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous to start my first day. After shadowing, I realized that everyone seems to know everyone. As the new person, who is acting as their boss is very intimidating. The staff, however, was very accepting. It was a simple night: watched different groups of boys play basketball, talked to a few staff members, etc. However, I did have to give a tour of the facility and I was asked a few questions that I was not prepared for such as pricing, weekend hours, etc.
Today I started training for my Building Supervisor position at the Fairview Park Recreation Department (Gemini Center). The set-up of the recreation center is very spread-out. When you walk in, to the right are three large banquet rooms. These rooms host about 80-85 people and have dividers that can allow all three rooms to be connected. To the left, you first approach the locker rooms and the pool areas. There are two pools in the Gemini Center: competition pool and a leisure side. Continuing down the hallway, you will see a Kids Club (where young children are watched while parents take a class/workout) and a few different studios. There are 4 studios in the recreation center used for group classes such as spinning, yoga, Zumba, TRX, etc. You will finally approach the concessions area where children can hang out and have snacks. To the right of the concession area are two full-size basketball courts with a few bleachers and six baskets per hoop. There is also a smaller, gym for baseball, volleyball and soccer called the Multi-purpose gym. You may be wondering where the fitness station is? It’s not a fitness station, but a fitness floor. The entire second floor is dedicated to fitness. There is every type of equipment that you could imagine with a track around it; there is even something to do in every corner to improve one’s fitness.
Overall, it is fairly simple. There are five essential duties:
